About the work

In Props for Everyday Misunderstanding, Sara Culmann explores unusual (or unconscious) interactions between humans and the material world. The video features objects confined within the limited space of a bathroom—various items their owner engages with daily, which mediate their perception of the world by triggering memories or associative chains. This focus on the material transforms the depiction of an ordinary act, such as shaving, into an analysis of the history of technologies and technical standards. Culmann constructs the narrative through the logic of gameplay: the video was recorded in a game engine using 3D modeling. The scene is shot from a first‑person perspective, meaning the viewer sees everything through the character’s eyes, but only as an observer, able to watch the process yet unable to act within it.
