Open storage is a place where you can see the art collection of Garage Museum of Contemporary Art, which focuses on works by Russian artists created from the 1980s to date.
The collection is closely linked to Garage Archive Collection, which was launched in 2012. Today, this wide-ranging collection of research materials is accessible to art historians and curators.
Drawing on its many years of research and exhibition work, Garage presents to a wide audience not only key names of recent decades but also forgotten or rarely exhibited artists. Both existing works and those commissioned by the Museum are considered for acquisition. Commissioned works can be found in non-exhibition spaces at Garage, such as the atrium and café.
Open storage is not a permanent exhibition. It is a flexible structure in which the display of art occurs in waves: the cells are updated at different times, which gives the Museum the opportunity to present a range of artistic practices and approaches. In addition to individual works in open storage, there are thematic sections exploring the activities of various artists and institutions, as well as artist’s books.
In 2025, open storage is focused on the display of performance, video, digital art, and installation, reflecting the Museum’s research interest in the preservation and study of unconventional art practices.
Open storage is available for independent visits, as part of guided and mediation tours, and as part of the Museum’s inclusive program. The project is accompanied by an extensive public program, which includes lecture series, classes for children, and much more.
