DESCRIPTION

This course of fifteen lectures offers  an introduction to the history of design from the emergence of industrial production until today. 

Course covers key phenomena, the birth and implementation of new technologies, and the theory and practice of creating objects in different countries. The main theme of the course is the evolution of design in the context of the political and socio-economic collisions of the 20th century. The overview will cover automobiles, fashion, and interior, graphic, and product design. Maria Savostyanova will discuss the cultural contributions of prominent designers and explore the connections between design, architecture, and art in the 20th century.

ABOUT THE LECTURER

 

Maria Savostyanova is an art historian and design critic, Deputy Editor-in-Chief at Interior+Design, and author of over 350 articles on consumer and collectible design. Convenor of the Theory and History of Culture program at the Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia, she has been reviewing major contemporary art and design exhibitions for fifteen years.
