About the work

Sara Culmann’s works always have a narrative framework reminiscent of an encyclopedic structure, around which various implications and associations cluster. C.A.R.R.I.E. (Curious Asking Recursive Rapid Inquisitorial Everlasting system) also has a hybrid composition that weaves together multiple threads. At the core of the narrative lies a nonexistent sci‑fi novel whose protagonist is Carrie Bradshaw from the popular TV series Sex and the City, known for her eponymous column in The New York Star newspaper (also fictional). The novel’s theme introduces another idea: that the world people are used to viewing from a consumerist perspective may exist beyond utilitarian function—that is, independently, for its own sake. Culmann proposes that different materials and substances can interact with one another much like people do. Her fantastical Carrie studies the relationships between materials just as Sex and the City’s Carrie examined human relationships—through reflection and inquisitive questioning. C.A.R.R.I.E. was created using a game engine, a tool that the artist often employs in her practice.
