A discussion of Alexey Konakov’s book Waning World: A History of the “Incredible” in the Late USSR.

DESCRIPTION

Waning World, which was published by Garage in 2022, is an attempt to reconstruct and describe a rather specific discourse about the «Soviet incredible.»

This discourse is well-known to anyone with a special interest in the Soviet past or who lived in the USSR at that time and recalls frequent conversations about psychics, yogis, alien civilizations, the abominable snowman, the Tunguska meteorite, and so on. Soviet citizens actively discussed such subjects, and while this interest may seem odd and marginal, it clearly indicates something important in the social structure, the political situation, and the ideological climate of the time.

The moderator of the meeting will be Marina Sidakova, a religious studies expert who is a production editor at Garage Museum of Contemporary Art. Participants will recall the most «incredible» phenomena of the Soviet past, discuss the nature of this discourse, and attempt to discover the reasons for its popularity in mass culture.

We recommend that you read the book before the meeting.

The paper version is available in Garage Shop with a 10% discount and the electronic version, with a 25% discount, can be bought on the LitRes site. The discount promo code will be provided after registration.
