In summer and fall 2026, Garage Museum of Contemporary Art and Institute of Musical Initiatives will present the program Modulation: Music in a Transitional State: a series of concerts and events with artists, researchers, and representatives of the music industry. The program celebrates music as a live process that reflects changes in culture and the industry.
The central events of the program are three concerts in Garage Atrium, each reflecting the transformations taking place in music today through language, genre, and style experiments by cross-genre artists who work at the intersection of various cultural contexts.
On July 29, the program will open with a concert by Kate NV, a solo avant-pop project by Katya Shilonosova, whose influences include Japanese disco pop, neoclassical music, and the Soviet avantgarde. She works with texts in English, Russian, French, and Japanese and combines performance art with sonic experimentation.
On September 5, there will be a performance by Samrattama, a project by Kazakhstani artist Samrat Irzhasov, whose work is based on a dialogue between tradition and contemporary sound. His works are a mix of music, theater, and contemporary art, and his texts in Russian and Kazakh explore identity, memory, and personal experiences.
On October 23, the program will end with a concert by FAZI, the internationally acclaimed alternative band from China. FAZI combine postpunk, art and kraut rock with Chinese musical tradition and an improvisational approach to composition.
The public program will include talks and discussions on the changes taking place in the music industry today—from the role of the artist to conceptual solutions—and the processes that influence those changes.
