Part of the program Modulation: Music in a Transitional State by Garage and the Institute for Music Initiatives (IMI), the first event in this series of lectures and talks will focus on authorship and how it works in the age of digital algorithms.
Today, it is no longer enough for an artist to simply create music, which is increasingly produced and evaluated by algorithms that have become nearly impossible to compete with: original music has no legal protection, and artists themselves lack the resources to produce as much content as AI can.
The speakers will discuss what can help an artist get noticed today. How important for contemporary musicians are image, sound quality, relationships with fans, and an artistic milieu? Is it possible to be an innovator in a world built on references? Does social media make artist promotion easier? And can a musician preserve originality and authorship in a world where almost any style can be reproduced with technology?
