Discussion Music and Archives: How to Work with the Sound Heritage of the Past

Date

Schedule

19:30–21:00

Place

Garage Auditorium

DESCRIPTION

Sound exists only in the present moment, constantly slipping away from the listener.

Some researchers and musicians attempt to reconstruct the sounds of the past using surviving scores, plans, and documentary evidence. Others use archival recordings as artistic material, combining them with contemporary sounds and placing them in new contexts.

Participants will discuss how sound can be used to explore cultural memory, whether it is possible to recreate the sound of a bygone era (and whether such a reconstruction can be considered authentic), and how new musical expressions emerge from field recordings and voices recovered from the past.
