Pertsy is the duo of Oleg Petrenko and Ludmila Skripkina, which emerged within the 1980s Moscow Conceptualist milieu. They created works “in a new vein of psychedelic sociality.” According to Petrenko, at that time they “equally felt the roaring silence of late Soviet reality,” the obsessive, monotonous hum of everyday existence that became the foundation of their visual language. From the late 1980s onward, didactic charts borrowed from Soviet textbooks and popular science publications became a recurring formal element in their practice. These diagrams served as a matrix for meditations on the psychedelic stratification of reality. Over time, this conceptual device developed into their large‑scale series entitled Popular Science Art.
In Untitled, the artists present an absurdist chart illustrating the correlation between types of labor and daily energy expenditure in calories. According to this data, the highest expenditure is attributed to mowers and the lowest to tractor drivers. The surface of the work is adorned with counter‑reliefs in the shape of canisters, provoking a sense of bewilderment and disrupting the viewer’s perception of familiar imagery. Whereas in the late Soviet era the arbitrariness of official data stemmed from ideological concealment of economic indicators, by the turbulent early 1990s all numbers had completely lost credibility, becoming mere echoes of the former statistical system. It is precisely this mismatch between form and content, between the declarative and the actual, that draws the artists’ close attention. Ironically “reflecting reality,” they entrap the viewer in a hermeneutic snare—a space of paradoxes and inconsistencies where no unambiguous answers exist.

In this work, the group once again turns to the language of visual propaganda, transforming it into an absurd hybrid of a school display or agitational poster. At the center of the composition is a simplified diagram in the form of a giant yellow arrow with temporal markers: “In 20 minutes,” “In 40 minutes,” “In three days there will be 375 wagons weighing 7,500,000 kg.” What exactly will happen remains unknown. The lower part of the painting features stylized images of railway cars. Counter‑reliefs of canisters, chaotically embedded into the fiberboard—the group’s signature tool—distort the orderliness of the plane and break the illusion of “clarity.” Any attempt at interpretation collapses against the work’s total semantic opacity. As in the duo’s other pieces, the principle of logical rupture operates here: the viewer is offered only the illusion of meaning. The work becomes a critical commentary on the language of late Soviet agitation, where numbers, graphs, and facts existed autonomously, as empty shells detached from reality.

The surface of the container is covered with a pseudo‑scientific table filled with formulas, symbols, and designations of elementary particles (for example, νₑ, π⁰, μ⁺). The visual language evokes the aesthetics of laboratory samples—material carriers of knowledge. Yet the semantics are destroyed: the table cannot be read, and scientific precision is replaced by decorative mimicry. The canister acts as a symbol of alienness and absurdity. Rust, worn materials, and rough textures enhance the impression of a post‑apocalyptic document; an artifact of a vanished era where science, power, and language merged into a single form.

В начале 1960‑х годов юный ученик художественной школы, а потом студент Московского высшего художественно‑промышленного училища (бывшее Строгановское), был очарован этой идеей. «Бесконечность устройства мира — первое очень сильное впечатление… Подчиняясь этому импульсу, я старался обозначить природу бесконечности, ее дыхание», — вспоминал Инфанте. В 1962 году он вступил в содружество художников геометрического направления в искусстве (с 1964 года — группа «Движение») и работал с единомышленниками до 1968 года.

Вдохновленный проектами русского авангарда, Инфанте экспериментировал с языком геометрической абстракции и пытался выразить бесконечность в ритме повторяющихся форм и структур. An Idea of Infinity, or Three

In 1987, they moved into the famous squat on Furmanny Lane, one of the key hubs of unofficial perestroika‑era art. It was at this time that their artistic language took final shape: didactic tables and diagrams from academic journals and textbooks—operating as signs of “scientific authenticity” that had lost their meaning and turned into empty shells—came to occupy a central place in the artists’ practice.

By combining graphic illustration, textual fragments, and relief inserts, the duo created a visual hybrid of a scientific diagram and an informational display. The semantic focal point is an image of a birch tree, beneath which are six blue buckets. The inscription reads “60 liters,” yet the viewer cannot tell what is being measured—rainfall, birch sap or work output. Born in Voronezh, in the 1970s and 1980s Svetlana was part of the Moscow unofficial art milieu. In 1988, she emigrated to New York (USA) together with her husband and collaborator, artist Igor Kopystiansky. She has participated in numerous exhibitions, including the 9th Sydney Biennale (1992), the 22nd São Paulo Biennial (1994), the 4th Istanbul Biennial (1995), the 4th Lyon Biennial (1997), the 2nd Johannesburg Biennial (1997), and Documenta 11 (Kassel, 2002).
