John Baldessari: This not that
This catalog was published on the occasion of the exhibition held at Cornerhouse, Manchester, 6 May — 25 June 1995; Serpentine Gallery, London, 12 July — 28 August 1995; Wurttembergischer Kunstverein, Stuttgart, 21 September — 19 November 1995; Moderna Galerija Ljubljana, 14 December — 27 January 1996; Museet For Samtidskunst, Oslo, 17 February — 5 May 1996; Fundacao Calouste Gulbenkian, Lisbon, 4 June — 1 September 1996.
A major survey of John Baldessari's work seems especially timely now, with the revival of interest in Conceptual Art and given the current generation of young artists involved in conceptual and text-related work. His approach to Conceptual Art has always been ironic and playful, in marked contrast to the philosophical austerity of the East Coast conceptual artists, and he continues to work and experiment with the same vigour and originality that has marked his entire career.
