Garage Screen and our new partner, footwear, clothing, and accessories brand TJ Collection present the series of screenings The Color of World Cinema featuring films by Pedro Almodóvar, Bernardo Bertolucci, and François Ozon, each set in a uniquely colored world.
Color is one of the key means of expression in film and a language spoken by Almodóvar, Bertolucci, and Ozon. Each of these directors has their own vocabulary, style, and syntax—their own colors. Discussing the many variations of color in his book Chroma, filmmaker and artist Derek Jarman chose not to include any illustrations, but to describe all phenomena in words, as his perception of color would necessarily be different from that of his readers in that same way that the opinions of two people looking at the same color always differ. Everyone sees their own color, and every filmmaker creates their own color world.
However, Almodóvar, Bertolucci, and Ozon share a similar focus on the emancipatory potential of color. Color unsettles harmony, brings chaos, signals irrational feelings and passions. For Almodóvar, color creates its own narrative around the emotional life of his characters. Bertolucci explores the rebellious insatiability and sensuality of color. Ozon uses its liberating flexibility.
