Sokol: From Constructivism to the Aesthetics of Stalinist Empire Style

DESCRIPTION

The series of walks covering the architecture of Moscow over the last century ends with a route around the Sokol district.

Participants will study the move from constructivism to Stalinist empire style and then to the architecture of the Thaw period through buildings such as Fire Station No. 19; the building at 75 Leningradsky Prospekt, which was nicknamed the Generals’ Building and known not only for its monumental forms but also its famous residents; standardized constructivist hostels from 1935; the experimental complex of the former Timiryazev Pedagogical College; and the postwar complex of the Almaz Scientific Production Association. The history and preconditions of the construction of Leningradsky Prospekt will also be touched upon.

The walk will end with the artists’ village in Sokol, an alternative form of development of urban infrastructure and one of the first Soviet “garden cities.”
