Is there a difference between solitude and loneliness? How did thinkers of various epochs understand the two categories? Is loneliness always forced, and solitude voluntary?
The latter is often regarded as an example of voluntary alienation from society. The freedom of choosing solitude makes it desirable and attractive in many cases. The strive for alienation can be caused by fatigue from communication with others or information excess. Loneliness, conversely, is usually experienced as a state of longing for communication and understanding. Can loneliness be beneficial and solitude harmful?
