Reading Group around Culture and Imperialism by Edward Said

Date

Place

Garage Auditorium

DESCRIPTION

A reading group celebrating the publication by Garage of Edward Said’s book Culture and Imperialism.

Over four meetings, participants will discuss the contemporary relevance of this text by the founder of decolonial theory, Edward Said, and his methodology, which approaches a literary work not as a set of its author’s ideas but as part of the global historical and cultural context, which most often remains outside the work itself.

In addition to Culture and Imperialism, participants will read works by British writers: Rudyard Kipling’s novel Kim (1901), set in late-nineteenth-century British India, and Graham Greene’s The Quiet American (1955), in which the author criticizes U.S. foreign policy in Vietnam. Both works were popular among Russian-speaking readers and widely translated in the USSR.

Participants will work individually, reading the texts suggested before each meeting, and collectively by discussing the texts they have read in a group. The group will be moderated by Russian writers Stepan Gavrilov and Maria Lebedeva.

At the end, the group will produce a small collective publication for «Garage on Paper, ” the Telegram channel of the Museum’s publishing program.

Texts for reading will be available in epub and pdf formats. Participants will also receive a discount for the purchase of the books Culture and Imperialism and Orientalism in Garage Shop.
