Art historian Katarina Lopatkina’s research, Bastards of Cultural Relations: International Artistic Contacts in the USSR, 1920–1950s, describes and partly reconstructs the system of Soviet international artistic contacts in the period, demonstrating the wide range of multidirectional efforts that were made every time «alien» elements of Western culture entered the Soviet cultural space.
The moderators of the meeting are Daria Bobrenko, lead researcher at Garage, and Viktor Belozerov, an art historian and expert on cultural relations between Japan and Russia. Participants will discuss the nature of «cultural relations, ” their role in the life of the USSR, and why it is important to study them.
