Together with artist Dmitry Gorelyshev participants will create an illustration or cover for their favorite book.
Dmitry Gorelyshev will introduce books from Garage open storage, focusing on Ilya Kabakov’s cover designs. For example, for a series of books by Evgeny Mar, Kabakov devised a system of registers and cells—a kind of grid in which he placed small narratives and texts, thereby deconstructing classical illustration. This technique brings together diverse cultural and artistic influences: medieval initials and miniatures, the book and ornamental traditions of Art Nouveau, comics, cinema, and animation. It also draws on Kabakov’s conceptual art, in which even the most mundane objects become subjects of close study. Participants will create their own works using this method of deconstruction.
