Masterclass: Creating a Keychain with a Little Secret

DESCRIPTION

Together with artist Katya Gushchina participants will discuss selected works by Viktor Pivovarov and then create keychains with drawings inspired by the exhibition.

Escape is one of the central themes in the work of Ilya Kabakov and Viktor Pivovarov. It can imply physical movement, emigration, or a metaphorical flight—in the album Kabakov Meets Pivovarov in a Corridor of a Publishing House, the two artists literally escape through a window to have an important conversation. Characters fly into space, vanishing beyond the edge of the page. Even their transition into the world of children’s illustration was a kind of escape; a way to speak about complex things through simple images.

The interplay of text and image generates a third meaning, a doorway into another reality. Katya Gushchina will invite participants to consider the keychain as a portal and create a pocket artifact with their own drawings, a tool for “escape.”
