A bold biopic about Amedeo Modigliani and Johnny Depp’s first directorial work in 25 years.
Paris, 1916. The genius Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani—still unknown and already suffering from the disease that will eventually kill him—is unsuccessfully trying to sell a painting. His agent Zbo, Polish art dealer Léopold Zborowski, has found a collector, but Modigliani needs to impress him. The artist’s days are filled with painting, slacking with his friends Chaïm Soutine and Maurice Utrillo, and closeness with the wilful writer Beatrice Hastings, with only a fragile hope of a brighter future. That future will come, but Modigliani will not be there to see it.
Modì: Three Days on the Wing of Madness is an adaptation of a 1979 play by Dennis McIntyre, spiced up with Johnny Depp’s screenwriting inventions. The true star of the film is without a doubt Italian lead Riccardo Scamarcio. His Modigliani attracts everyone: drunks happy to cough up 50 francs for a painting by the future icon, children fascinated by his works in a self-organized exhibition in a park, and women of all ages. Without any claim to historical accuracy (which would be difficult with an artist so acclaimed and well researched), Modì attempts to capture his spirit and emotions over three invented days from his Parisian life during World War I.
The film premiered at San Sebastian Film Festival in September 2024.
The film will be screened in English and Italian with Russian subtitles.
