DESCRIPTION

This minimalist drama about female loneliness and human cruelty borders on a psychological thriller. Charlotte Rampling’s performance earned her the Volpi Cup for Best Actress in Venice.

Hannah (Charlotte Rampling) is an elderly housekeeper for a wealthy family and looks after their son. Spending most of the time on her own, she roams the streets, only occasionally coming across other people at a swimming pool or a group therapy session. Hannah is trying to forget about her personal tragedy: her husband has been convicted of a crime of which she believes him innocent. Carrying this weight, the sad old woman gradually loses all connections to the world that had seemed easy and familiar. With its northern light, deserted landscapes, and cold tension, Andrea Pallaoro’s minimalist drama has set the stage for one the best roles in Rampling’s career—a woman on the edge, dissolving in reality and discovering an abyss that separates her from everyone else.
