Discussion: The Future of the Biennial Format in the Post-Covid Epoch

DESCRIPTION

As a part of The Art Newspaper Russia Film Festival 2021, a panel discussion on the future of the biennial format in the post-Covid world will take place in Garage Auditorium. After the discussion, Garage Screen summer cinema will present the premiere of the documentary and suddenly it all blossoms, which documents the 2nd Riga International Biennial of Contemporary Art.

Speakers from international and national biennials—Riga International Biennal of Contemporary Art, Ural Industrial Biennial of Contemporary Art—and Garage Museum of Contemporary Art will discuss the transformation of physical forms of interaction with art, the future of the biennial format, and alternative methods of representing material and digital art objects based on their own experience. The starting point for the conversation will be the experience of Anastasia Blokhina, Executive Managing Director of the Riga International Biennal of Contemporary Art, which transformed from an exhibition space into a film set during the pandemic. Garage curator Valentin Diaconov will follow with a talk about “form play” at the Garage Triennial of Russian Contemporary Art, while Ural Industrial Biennial curators Misal Adnan Yıldız and Assaf Kimmel will describe the conceptual thinking behind the Biennial and share their thoughts on the future of large-scale art events. The discussion will be moderated by Milena Orlova, Editor-in-Chief of The Art Newspaper Russia.

The discussion will take place in English with simultaneous translation.
