Discussion “Ecology as the New Politics: What’s the Plan when There is No Plan B?”

DESCRIPTION

The panel discussion on environmental changes and their effect on economy, social relationships, and culture will involve experts in the fields of ecology, economy of sustainable development, new technologies, and education.

Environmental changes are not only altering our planet’s landscapes today but also directly affect economic development. Is it reasonable to invest in the construction of a hydroelectric power station on a river that feeds on the waters from a glacier which is going to melt down in thirty to forty years? Is it profitable to build ports in the Indian Ocean if the Arctic will soon become navigable all year-round? And is it possible to insure ourselves against crop failure caused by the mass death of pollinating insects?

Even though new technologies promise to solve some of these problems, only significant changes in culture, life style and social relations will allow to reach a balanced relationship with nature. Such changes are impossible without rethinking the educational and professional landscapes.

The experts will discuss what corporations, governments, and international organizations can do today—in order to prepare for the unpredictable, turbulent, but at once exciting future of humankind in the age of Anthropocene.

The event will conclude with a Q&A session with the audience and online viewers.
