Together with artist Misha Nikatin, participants will explore books featuring illustrations by conceptual artists Ilya Kabakov and Viktor Pivovarov and then create their own drawings.
Though Kabakov and Pivovarov worked for the same publishing houses, they had very different views on the nature of book illustration. Where for one it was a craft and a daily routine, the other saw in it a means of artistic expression.
Misha Nikatin will discuss how the artists’ approaches differed, using examples from his own archive. The group will reflect on where the line lies between commissioned work and art. During the creative part of the workshop, participants will create their own drawings inspired by illustrations from the 1970s and 1980s.
