DESCRIPTION

Photographs by German artist Thomas Demand feature details of buildings, interiors, natural landscapes, and everyday objects. But take a closer look, and you will see that all of those are made of paper. In his works, the boundaries of reality are erased: are those real objects or models?

Garage offers three tour routes that will introduce visitors to the work of Thomas Demand.

The tours will be followed by workshops, where participants can make their own artworks.

HOW TO TAKE PART

Register at neurodiversity@garagemca.org no later than seven days before your intended visit.

Schedule

Route Art for the Youngest

Tour

For his works, Thomas Demand builds elaborate three-dimensional paper models. Participants will look at the buildings he models and their parts, their geometry, and their materials. What is a house made of? Which shapes do we use to build it? What are those shapes made of and why? Kids will also learn about various textures found in buildings (smooth floors, rough walls). Together with the guide, they will search for different textures at the Museum.

Workshop

At the workshop, participants will learn to recreate textures on paper and make books of textures.

Route Natural geometry. Textures and Materials

Tour

Thomas Demand recreates the world around him using various techniques of working with paper and take photographs of the resulting models. Participants will discuss the difference between the real and the artificial and find out what geometric shapes the objects we see every day can be made of and how the world feels to the touch. They will also talk about how various textures are made visible by light and how they can make us feel.

Workshop

Participants will try to recreate familiar textures using paper and light up their works to take photographs of their models. The photographs will show how our experience of texture changes with the direction of light.

Route Expanded Reality

Tour

The works of Thomas Demand have no people in them, leaving a lot to our imagination. Paper models in his photographs recreate real objects (buildings, streets, rooms, interior elements). Participants will explore the spaces in the photographs to later populate them with their own characters and stories. They will also find out what has really happened in those places and which historical events the artist has addressed in his work.

Workshop

Participants can now experiment with their ideas and use various techniques to make Thomas Demand’s works come to life. Each participant will create their own work based on Thomas Demand’s.
