The eclectic, colorful, and absurd art of Irina Korina emerges from the simplest materials and things that are transformed into carnival‑like scenery of everyday life. A theater designer by training, Korina works as a spatial artist, forming and conceptualizing environments. Her installations are distinguished by a constructed dramaturgy, often including psychological intrigue. 

 Green Snowflake and Red Snowflake are part of the project Humiliated and Elated, shown at XL Gallery in 2016. The installation consisted of two parts. Psychedelic works on paper were mounted under glass on metal holders placed under illuminated lampshade‑like fringed canopies. Each sheet reproduced out‑of‑context clichéd phrases: “But for some reason I can't,” “Everything is wrong,” “But no...,” “Probably the day after tomorrow,” “I'll become a zero,” “Well, it's probably too much,” “Like in a film,” and so on. The symbol of the project was the phrase “Fatalism + Cynicism” and an image of two swans. Giant dreamcatchers, garlands, metal snowflakes, and other festive decorations hung from the ceiling. By capturing these incongruous afterthoughts of the society of spectacle, Korina exposes the cultural memory of the collective unconscious. The large metal snowflake becomes a heavyweight phantom of a childhood memory left in the distant past.

In 1986, four friends decided to form an art group called World Champions. Despite its short life (the group disbanded in 1988), World Champions was one of the most striking artistic phenomena of the perestroika period. The backbone of the group comprised Gia Abramishvili, Konstantin Latyshev, Boris Matrosov and Andrei Yakhnin. They studied together at Moscow’s School No. 96 in Bolshoi Tishinsky Pereulok, where they were taught physics by a very special man, Evgeny Matusov. He organized meetings with interesting people for his students, including Boris Grebenshchikov, Sven Gundlakh, and Konstantin Zvezdochotov. Contact with these people grew into friendship and then joint artistic practice. 

 The “champions” selected irony as their main tool for dissecting both late‑1980s Soviet reality and the specific, closed world of unofficial art. They made fun of the unintelligible practices of the older generation of Moscow conceptualists and of state sport and public organizations, with their outdated methods of transforming groups of individuals into collectives. The group’s actions and demonstrations had an absurd and spontaneous character in which a sudden idea of a “meaningless feat” was immediately embodied, erasing the boundaries between art and life. The artists changed the direction of rivers, used shampoo and rags to clean the Black Sea cliffs and seafront, and created pictures and objects from worthless materials, with no interest in preserving them after they had been shown at a one‑day exhibition. 

 When creating drawings and paintings the “champions” parodied the team method of making state commissions for artistic products. Participants published a decree that defined in detail not only the image but also the quantity of materials available to the artist who would make it. The group’s garish, flashy paintings are stylistically similar to children’s drawings and lubok folk prints, comics, and posters.

Her first major project, Urangst, was presented in 2003 at XL Gallery. Korina carefully directs the constructed environment, building a dramaturgy and systematically immersing the audience in a surrealistic whirlwind of sensations and emotions. The main working material is ubiquitous cheap finishing textures, fabrics, tablecloths and oilcloths, plastic cladding, siding, Styrofoam, and so on. Spectacular garish ornamentation and kitsch embellishment play an important role. Korina's installations are full of carnival‑like madness and a deliberate pretentiousness of various aesthetics. 

 Spectrum (2013) is one of a number of bas‑relief objects that were created outside a series and are characterized by their compact size. The multilayered structure of the work is filled with references to football themes and national motifs. The object is assembled from fragments of the club symbols of Zenit, Arsenal, and Lokomotiv, which are intertwined with traditional Russian scarves. Irina Korina offers a reflection on the concept of national pride: its nature, origins, and how pride “in our own” transforms into hostility and aggression.

Poet and Pistol is one of Gor Chahal’s earliest works and comprises photographs made by Andrei Bezukladnikov, collages, painting, and poems. Addressing himself to the binomial “artist‑personality,” who was an important element of the conceptual art of the 1970s, he is transformed into a romantic decadent poet and depicts him in the monochrome style of noir or the filmmakers of the “new wave.” Using curly hair, white shirt, tie and black jacket Chahal aestheticizes the life of his lyrical hero, contrasting it to Soviet reality and that of the Perestroika period. He brings together contradictions — life and death, abstraction and reality, invention and fact‑in a single series without a defined narrative, anticipating the consciousness of the video clip. The handsome dandy wanders Moscow’s boulevards, gateways, and hotels in attempt to find a victim or escape the uncertainty of death, and life goes on in the background: mothers with prams, passers‑by on benches. He is a superfluous person, an aesthetically alien element who is out of time and place. This is how Gor Chahal visualizes the poetic metaphor of his art, which was marginal in the Perestoika period and unable to catch up with rapidly changing reality.

The reasons for the move are described briefly and vaguely (financial problems) and neither the activities of the publisher nor the identity of its founder are revealed. Kirill Gluschenko’s project is one of Russian art’s most successful examples of founding a “quasi‑institution” in recent years. During its existence Gluschenkoizdat Press published several photo books on the post‑socialist cities of Eastern Europe (Pskov, Dresden, Kaliningrad) and organized a monumental “summary exhibition” of its activities, Our Days are Rich and Bright (former building of the Moskva furniture factory, 2016). 
 
 The title of the video is taken from the name of a café that opened in June 1976 on Moskovsky Prospekt in Kaliningrad. The café itself does not appear in the film. Nevertheless, Kaliningrad, with its mixture of buildings from the German and Soviet periods, is the central character. 
 
 For Gluschenko the aesthetic of a European city with a regular urban plan is an object of nostalgia and admiration. And even the era of stagnation does not seem so uncomfortable: at that time, in place of complete freedom, intellectuals and creative people had access to a wide range of flexible strategies of doublethink. A person could immerse themselves in their profession and no one would touch them. They could work half the year officially and spend the other half doing their own thing or simply sitting in the boiler room and writing poetry. Gluschenko’s film immerses the viewer in a blissful state of timelessness that is apolitical and even noble.

На оборотной стороне написано: „Прежде, чем начать равномерно наматывать нитку на эту картонку напишите здесь свою фамилию и дату перемотки“. Участник акции, перемотав нить (перемотка в среднем занимает 20 минут), находит на другой картонке точно такие же надписи, как и на той картонке, на которую он перемотал нитку. В случае, если данным экземпляром „Моталки“ уже пользовались, он обнаруживает фамилию того человека, который перемотал нить с узкой картонки на широкую. Kirill Gluschenko was born in Kaliningrad. He graduated from the Institute of Contemporary Art (Moscow) and the Photography Department of the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig. Selected group exhibitions: The Way of Enthusiasts , Casa Dei Tre Oci, Venice (2012); Detective , Moscow Museum of Modern Art (2014); Space Force Construction , V‑A-C Zattere, Venice (2017); General Rehearsal , Moscow Museum of Modern Art (2018); 2nd Garage Triennial of Russian Contemporary Art, Garage Museum of Contemporary Art, Moscow (2020). He is a winner of the Innovation Prize in the nomination New Generation (2017), the Marion‑Ermer Preis (Leipzig, 2018), the Architectural Book Award (Frankfurt am Main, 2019) and the competition Best Book Design From All Over the World (Frankfurt am Main, 2020). He is the recipient of a grant from the Cultural Foundation of the Free State of Saxony (2018).

Glushchenko Kirill

Andrei Monastyrsky was born in Petsamo (Pechenga, Murmansk Oblast). He graduated from the Philology Faculty of Moscow State University. He was a founder (1976), theorist, and author of large‑scale actions in the group Collective Actions. He took part in the Biennale of Dissent (Venice, 1977), the 50th (main project, 2003), 52nd (main project, 2007) and 54th Venice Biennale (Russian Pavilion, 2011) and also documenta 12 (Kassel, 2007). He is a recipient of the Andrei Bely Prize for his important contribution to the development of Russian literature (2003) and the Innovation Prize in the nominations Theory, Criticism, Art History (2010) and For Creative Contribution to the Development of Contemporary Art (2015).

Monastyrsky Andrei

Irina Korina was born in Moscow. She graduated from the Faculty of Stage Design at the Russian Academy of Theatrical Art (GITIS) and the Institute of Contemporary Art (Moscow), also studying at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. She took part in the 53rd (Russian Pavilion, 2009) and 57th Venice Biennale (main project, 2017). She is a recipient of the Innovation Prize in the nomination New Generation (2015).

Korina Irina

Gor Chahal is a mathematician by training, the author of poems and musical‑poetic performances, and one of the pioneers of multimedia art in Russia. In the late 1980s and early 1990s he was a member of Moscow’s art underground and rock scene. He was the founder of the performance groups Parallel Actions (1985–1987) and Theaterpost (1987–1988) and performed a series of actions with the art group World Champions (1988). In 1989, he played the lead role in Oleg Teptsov’s film The Initiated. In 1990, his debut solo exhibition took place at First Gallery (Moscow). In 1995 and 1996, he was a scholarship holder at the Berlin Academy of Arts and in 2004 at the Museum Quarter in Vienna. Since the late 1990s he has explored Christian themes, combining contemporary art, scientific methods, and theological discourse. In 2014, he became an honorary member of the Russian Academy of Arts and in 2022 a corresponding member of the Academy’s Department of New Art Trends.

Chahal Gor

Gia Abramishvili was born in Moscow. In 1988 he graduated from the Journalism Faculty of Moscow State Institute of International Relations. From 1986 to 1988 he was part of the group World Champions. Selected group exhibitions: The Quest for Self‑Expression: Painting in Moscow and Leningrad from 1960 to 1990, Columbus Museum of Art, USA (1990), In de USSR en Erbuiten, Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (1991); Kunst im verborgenen.
