Pertsy is the duo of Oleg Petrenko and Ludmila Skripkina, which emerged within the 1980s Moscow Conceptualist milieu. They created works “in a new vein of psychedelic sociality.” According to Petrenko, at that time they “equally felt the roaring silence of late Soviet reality,” the obsessive, monotonous hum of everyday existence that became the foundation of their visual language. From the late 1980s onward, didactic charts borrowed from Soviet textbooks and popular science publications became a recurring formal element in their practice. These diagrams served as a matrix for meditations on the psychedelic stratification of reality. Over time, this conceptual device developed into their large‑scale series entitled Popular Science Art.
In Untitled, the artists present an absurdist chart illustrating the correlation between types of labor and daily energy expenditure in calories. According to this data, the highest expenditure is attributed to mowers and the lowest to tractor drivers. The surface of the work is adorned with counter‑reliefs in the shape of canisters, provoking a sense of bewilderment and disrupting the viewer’s perception of familiar imagery. Whereas in the late Soviet era the arbitrariness of official data stemmed from ideological concealment of economic indicators, by the turbulent early 1990s all numbers had completely lost credibility, becoming mere echoes of the former statistical system. It is precisely this mismatch between form and content, between the declarative and the actual, that draws the artists’ close attention. Ironically “reflecting reality,” they entrap the viewer in a hermeneutic snare—a space of paradoxes and inconsistencies where no unambiguous answers exist.

Холщовый рюкзак загрунтован и покрыт рукописью, однако фрагментарность текста здесь минимальна, а расположение строк подчинено пластике объекта. Небольшие лакуны не мешают восприятию отрывков из лирической прозы Михаила Пришвина «Фацелия» — в частности, из глав «Капля и камень», «Граммофон», «Бездна» и «Ключ к счастью», где тема утраты переплетается с размышлениями о стойкости духа и исцеляющей силе искусства. The artist’ works are easily recognizable by their recurring “tabular” structure and pseudo‑scientific graphics. The usual link between image and meaning is deliberately broken in their practice. Rationality, didacticism, and disciplinarity become targets of artistic dissection, deconstruction, and absurdity.

In this work, the group once again turns to the language of visual propaganda, transforming it into an absurd hybrid of a school display or agitational poster. At the center of the composition is a simplified diagram in the form of a giant yellow arrow with temporal markers: “In 20 minutes,” “In 40 minutes,” “In three days there will be 375 wagons weighing 7,500,000 kg.” What exactly will happen remains unknown. The lower part of the painting features stylized images of railway cars. Counter‑reliefs of canisters, chaotically embedded into the fiberboard—the group’s signature tool—distort the orderliness of the plane and break the illusion of “clarity.” Any attempt at interpretation collapses against the work’s total semantic opacity. As in the duo’s other pieces, the principle of logical rupture operates here: the viewer is offered only the illusion of meaning. The work becomes a critical commentary on the language of late Soviet agitation, where numbers, graphs, and facts existed autonomously, as empty shells detached from reality.

Their works were built as fictitious constructions in which meaning was intentionally blocked or replaced by a simulacrum and interpretation became a trap: the apparent order—represented by tables, captions, and diagrams—only exposed structural emptiness. The group’s artistic gesture was meant to destroy the expectation that art should necessarily “say something.”
In this work, a square of window putty with a counter‑relief of a canister is mounted on a rusted piece of embossed iron. The surface of the container is covered with a pseudo‑scientific table filled with formulas, symbols, and designations of elementary particles (for example, νₑ, π⁰, μ⁺). The visual language evokes the aesthetics of laboratory samples—material carriers of knowledge. Yet the semantics are destroyed: the table cannot be read, and scientific precision is replaced by decorative mimicry. The canister acts as a symbol of alienness and absurdity. Rust, worn materials, and rough textures enhance the impression of a post‑apocalyptic document; an artifact of a vanished era where science, power, and language merged into a single form.

This layered and schizo‑hallucinatory imagery creates an interpretive space and inevitably evokes a sense of confusion. The artists deliberately avoided direct interpretations, evasively remarking that works designed as scientific or pseudo‑scientific studies possess “a specific semantic capacity.”

Partly continuing the avant‑garde traditions of OBERIU and Dadaism, the duo developed a unique artistic language in which irony coexists with post‑structuralist critique of the sign. Their practice grew from a sense of dissonance between the formal structure of Soviet “knowledge” and its inner hollowness.

Untitled—which continues the artists’ large‑scale series of absurdist charts titled Popular Science Art—appears as a dead construction, a symbol of bureaucratic emptiness and routine formality. For the artists, this incongruity between form and content became an occasion for ironic reflection on the perestroika era. The surface of the panel is decorated with counter‑reliefs of canisters, as if trying to break through from an otherworldly dimension but held back by the grid of the chart. This layered and schizo‑hallucinatory imagery creates an interpretive space and inevitably evokes a sense of confusion. The artists deliberately avoided direct interpretations, evasively remarking that works designed as scientific or pseudo‑scientific studies possess “a specific semantic capacity.”
