Polish artist Pawel Althamer (b.1967) is a noted explorer of the social and communicative powers of art. Althamer trained as a sculptor, and his work often incorporates depictions of the human form but just as often incorporates living people — sometimes even the viewers themselves.

Krytyka Polityczna: Global Activism

In 2009, the revered Swiss art publication and editions publisher, Parkett, celebrates its quarter‑centenary with a comprehensive retrospective collecting all 200 of the artists editions it has produced since 1984. (They include Tomma Abts, Maurizio Cattelan, John Currin, Peter Fischli/David Weiss, Nan Goldin, Dan Graham, Wade Guyton, Zoe Leonard, Paul McCarthy, Marilyn Minter, Cady Noland, Raymond Pettibon, Richard Prince, Charles Ray, Gerhard Richter, Pipilotti Rist, Ed Ruscha, Dana Schutz, Hiroshi Sugimoto and Christopher Wool, to name just a few.) “Commissioned by Parkett, the most important artists of our time have created editions that represent the essence of their art or reveal an unexpected dimension... the works cover every possible medium including painting, photographs, drawings, prints, sculptures, videos, DVDs, and sound pieces,” wrote Whitechapel's Iwona Blazwick in 2001.

Twenty years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, The Promises of the Past examines the former opposition between Eastern and Western Europe by reinterpreting the history of the Communist Bloc countries through art. Challenging the idea that art history is somehow linear and continuous, this transnational and multigenerational project features works by more than 50 artists, many of them from Central and Eastern Europe, including: Marina Abramovic, Yael Bartana, Dimitrije Basicevic (Mangelos), Tacita Dean, Liam Gillick, Sanja Ivekovic, Edward Krasinski, David Maljkovic, Marjetica Potrc and Monika Sosnowska. Accompanying an exhibition at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, this publication features previously unpublished archival documentation, as well as historic essays by Slavoj Zizek, Igor Zabel and others.

The fifth book in the series, this volume concludes this extraordinary publishing project by analyzing the fascinating and controversial phenomena of contemporary art. This volume presents ten chapters, each written by an international expert. To mention just a few: exhibition curator Nicolas Bourriad discusses installations, video and action art in the post‑media age. Gabriella Belli, director of the Mart of Trento and Rovereto, tells of the “meaning” of the contemporary museum. Paco Barragan, cultural broker, describes art fairs and explains what is understood by the term neobiennialism. And ample space is also devoted to the critical definitions of contemporary art, to the art market and the new way of collecting, to the relationship between art and politics, to the new, confusing frontiers of photography. Искусственный ад. Партиципаторное искусство и политика зрительства

Павел Альтхамер — польский художник, скульптор и автор перформансов, один из ключевых представителей «Кузницы» (Kowalnia) — мастерской Гжегожа Ковальского в Академии изящных искусств в Варшаве, определившей вектор развития польского искусства 1990‑х годов. В своей практике он обращается к нетрадиционным материалам, психофизическим практикам и различным формам социального взаимодействия. Сотрудничество с фондом «Группа Новолипье — окрыленные», который помогает людям с рассеянным склерозом, проекты «Общее дело» с жителями варшавского района Брудно и «Класс Эйнштейна» с трудными подростками демонстрируют интерес художника к партиципаторному искусству и преодолению границ между искусством и жизнью. Для Альтхамера подобное взаимодействие не только терапевтический процесс, но и способ социализации людей, зачастую остающихся невидимыми для общества.

В 2021 году художник разбил рядом с Музеем «Гараж» небольшой ландшафтный сад, в котором объединялись несочетаемые растения, предназначенный для медитаций и созерцания. Инсталляция, получившая название «Тишина», была задумана как место встречи разных социальных групп, где с помощью духовно‑телесных практик и тифломедиаций можно было по‑новому прочувствовать окружающую действительность. Графические работы «Без названия» появились во время подготовки инсталляции и вовлекали локальное сообщество в коллективное сотворчество. Альтхамер и куратор проекта Андрей Мизиано организовали домашнюю вечеринку с участием художников, музыкантов, дизайнеров, галеристов и друзей, предложив им зафиксировать на бумаге впечатления от встречи. Художник обозначил композицию, а участники наполнили ее хаотическими жестами: кто‑то оставил хулиганские надписи, кто‑то написал курс биткоина, кто‑то просто провел рукой по листу. В результате возникла многослойная графика, своеобразный дневник коллективного переживания. Эти работы фиксируют процесс совместного действия, в котором границы авторства размываются, а художественный акт становится формой общения и спонтанного объединения.
