Understanding design is impossible without analyzing its history, yet that history can be told in many different ways. Historians and theorists Catherine Geel and Claire Brunet examine the pivotal events in the history of design within their cultural contexts.

By deliberately juxtaposing and comparing conflicting concepts, the authors reveal the challenges and difficult questions that design encounters during development, whether specific issues of standardization, formal experimentation, functionality, and production, or global ones, ranging from social change to geopolitical factors and the environmental agenda.
