Art Projects Foundation came into existence in 2001, partly as a replacement for the Soros Center for Contemporary Art, which was active between 1994 and 2000. Its archive was transferred to the Foundation with the help of a grant from the Open Society Institute. In the 11 years it was managed by the Foundation, the archive saw the addition of new documents and publications donated by Moscow artists and art historians, and new material gathered by the staff. One of the main contributors to the archive was Yulia Ovchinnikova, an art historian and filmmaker who started documenting the Moscow art scene in 1994.</p>

The archive contains documentary materials relating to contemporary art in Moscow, Saint Petersburg, and other cities within Russia dating back to the late 1950s. Materials include documentary photographs and videos, articles published by newspapers and magazines, unpublished essays by artists and critics, exhibition posters, invitations and press releases.
Video documentation from the archive allows us to trace the careers of particular artists and identify the general currents of the Moscow art scene. Footage from the archive has already enabled the production of a range of films including the seven‑part Chronicles of Moscow Contemporary Art, and has been used in the making of many other documentaries and films about exhibitions in Moscow and abroad, as well as in educational events.</p>

Nikita Alexeev was born in Moscow. From 1964 to 1967, he studied at Moscow Middle Art School of the Moscow Surikov State Art Institute and then at 1905 Moscow State Academic Art College in the Department of Industrial Graphics and Advertising. From 1973 to 1976, he studied at Moscow Printing Institute in the Faculty of Artistic and Technical Design of Print Products (he did not graduate). From 1976 to 1983, he was a member of the group Collective Actions. He took part in the Biennale of Dissent (Venice, 1977). He was one of the organizers of MANI (Moscow Archive of New Art). From 1982 to 1984, he was co‑founder and director of APTART Gallery, which was located in his studio apartment in Moscow.

Aydan Salahova was born in Moscow. She graduated Moscow Surikov State Academic Art Institute (1987). From 1989 to 1992 she was co‑director and curator of First Gallery (Moscow). She was the founder of Aidan Gallery (Moscow, 1992–2012). She took part in the 44th and 54th Venice Biennale (Russian Pavilion, 1990; Azerbaijan Pavilion, 2011). She was a member of the Union of Artists of the USSR (1988) and is an academician of the Russian Academy of Arts (2002).

Andrei Monastyrsky was born in Petsamo (Pechenga, Murmansk Oblast). He graduated from the Philology Faculty of Moscow State University. He was a founder (1976), theorist, and author of large‑scale actions in the group Collective Actions. He took part in the Biennale of Dissent (Venice, 1977), the 50th (main project, 2003), 52nd (main project, 2007) and 54th Venice Biennale (Russian Pavilion, 2011) and also documenta 12 (Kassel, 2007). He is a recipient of the Andrei Bely Prize for his important contribution to the development of Russian literature (2003) and the Innovation Prize in the nominations Theory, Criticism, Art History (2010) and For Creative Contribution to the Development of Contemporary Art (2015).
