DESCRIPTION

As part of the Pushkin Museum’s Media Windows summer program and the Four Museums partnership, Garage Education Center will host a meeting called The Archive: An Artist’s Perspective featuring Russian artist Alexandra Mitlyanskaya.

In conversation with Olga Dementyeva, head of the Pushkin Museum’s media library, and Nastya Tarasova, chief conservator of Garage Archive Collection, Alexandra Mitlyanskaya, whose works will be included in the Pushkin Museum collection thanks to the support of patron Daria Karavaeva, will speak about the meaning of the archive for the artist and its role in artistic practice. During the meeting, the audience will learn about the “inner workings” of both the artist and the art archive and understand how the concept of an archive differs for an artist and for a professional archivist.

Before or after the discussion, visitors will have the opportunity to join a guided tour of Garage Archive Collection, which holds documentary material on Russian contemporary art from the postwar period. Nastya Tarasova will talk about modern methods of preserving information about artistic life and how archives make it possible to study the history of contemporary art.
