DESCRIPTION

Garage Screen summer cinema will be showing The Square—a surprise winner of the Palme d’Or at this year’s, 70th Cannes Film Festival.

A new picture by Ruben Östlund, the author of the much talked about Play (2011) and Force Majeure (2014), tells the story of a contemporary art museum curator, who sets on an adventurous mission to find out who stole his smartphone and wallet. Heading to the low-income districts of Stockholm to spread leaflets with threats to the potential thief, the protagonist Christian—a successful and decent man of liberal views—hardly imagines how it will turn out in the end.

The film is a mixture of comedy and drama, and a subtle ironic critique of the “discreet charm” of contemporary European society.

Having won the main competition at the 70th Cannes Film Festival (and become the first Swedish film to do so since 1951), The Square has been selected as the Swedish entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards.
