A Japanese supergirl fights ridiculous doll monsters, gigantic robots, and a mean general in a funny wig with her special superpower bracelet and a spaceship in the shape of her naked body.
Realeased straight to VHS in 1988, Ichiro Omomo’s film follows the adventures of a female superhero that fights a corrupt general and his robots. Star Virgin is Omomo’s light-hearted take on tokusatsu— a genre of films about superheroes that are heavily loaded with special effects. Indeed, the director’s entire filmography might be seen as an homage to the universe of Ultraman—one of the definitive examples of tokusatsu. Stylistically, the film takes after Omomo’s own earlier work—the series Mighty Lady that has been running on television since 1984 and also features supergirls fighting huge robots and mutants.
