The only drama in the program, Death and the Maiden is devoted to the private life of the artist, seamlessly connected to his practice, and explores his relations with his muses.
Dieter Berner’s feature, which opens the program, focuses on one of Schiele’s best-known paintings, The Man and the Maiden, which was later renamed Death and the Maiden. The film follows the short but eventful life of the great Viennese avant-garde artist, who defied classic notions of beauty and decency, against the backdrop of the First World War.
