Screening: Concerning Violence

DESCRIPTION

Concerning Violence is yet another take on the problem of neocolonialism, which is central to Köken Ergun’s project.

Göran Olsson’s remarkable video essay combines critical theory, investigative journalism, and a historical narrative presented from the victim’s (the colonized subject’s) perspective.

The documentary contains archival footage from Swedish documentaries between 1966 and 1987 showing some of the boldest anticolonial protests, discovered by the director by chance, as well as excerpts from The Wretched of the Earth by the French psychoanalyst and sociologist Frantz Fanon, whose essay Concerning Violence uncovers all of its horrors. The excerpts are narrated by African American neo-soul singer Lauryn Hill.
