Mike Mills’s retro mumblecore film 20th Century Women (2016) tells the story of three women of different ages living in a 1970s’ California and stars two of the prominent actresses of American independent cinema, Annette Benning and Greta Gerwig. The film was nominated for an Oscar for Best Screenplay.
A single mother Dorothea decides to get two ladies—her tenant, a young artist Abby, who is recovering from cancer, and a girl named Judy—to help her knock some sense into the head of her teenage son. A light-hearted and empowering film touches on a number of rarely articulated issues faced by twentieth-century American women, offering a feminist perspective on recent history.
