DESCRIPTION

David Hockney’s co-author, art critic Martin Gayford will speak in detail about the book’s creation, the selection of material, and lengthy conversations and arguments between the two authors.

A living legend and a genuine contemporary master of British art, David Hockney’s book A History of Pictures: From the Cave to the Computer Screen (2016), co-authored with his friend Martin Gayford, was published by Thames & Hudson shortly before the artist’s comprehensive retrospective at Tate Modern (2017). This joint project is a philosophical treatise on visual culture in general. Sharing their mutual interest in the technological advances of recent centuries, Hockney and Gayford engage in discussions about cinema, photography, computer gadgets and programs, which turns the book into an analysis of the visual in the broadest sense of the word, including Hockney’s own later works made with an iPad.
