DESCRIPTION

Eisenstein on Paper is the most comprehensive publication of graphic works by the famous filmmaker to date.

The book presents over 500 of Eisenstein’s drawings and sketches, some of them previously unpublished, from his personal collection kept at the Russian State Archive of Literature and Arts. Apart from graphic works, the album contains shots from Eisenstein’s films, photos, and other documentary materials.

The publication traces the extraordinary turns of Eisenstein’s life and artistic career through the evolving styles of his graphic works: from early drawings of his childhood to costume and film set sketches, from absurdist psychoanalytical jottings to late abstractions. Author Naum Kleiman, the leading specialist in Eisenstein’s oeuvre, presents the main motifs of the film-maker’s graphic legacy in a new way, citing and commenting on fragments of Eisenstein’s publications and memoirs, some of which are also published for the first time.

The book was first published in English by Thames and Hudson. The Russian edition will be presented at Garage by its author Naum Kleiman, translator Natalie Ryabchikova, Director of Garage Museum of Contemporary Art Anton Belov, director of Russian State Archive of Literature and Arts Tatiana Goriayeva, and editor-in-chief of Ad Marginem Press Alexander Ivanov.
