DESCRIPTION

Carmen Mörsch will present the Russian translation of the book Time for Cultural Mediation and discuss with the curators of the program—Alina Belishkina, Daria Malikova, and Marina Romanova—its relevance within the Russian context and views on mediation today, a decade after the book was written.

Art mediation has become widespread in the Russian context recently, especially among contemporary art museums: since 2015, this format has been used at venues such as Garage and the Ural Industrial Biennial. Many institutions launch their own training programs for mediators to work on concrete shows or for permanent employment. An important part of such training is the acquaintance with texts that outline the theory and practice of mediation at the international and European level.

Written by a team of authors led by Carmen Mörsch, Time for Cultural Mediation was first published in 2012 by the University of Zurich in four languages at once, becoming the first comprehensive guidebook and, at the same time, a reflection on such topics as mediation terminology, principles and generalizing practices in the Swiss cultural context. A publication that has been setting the methodological framework for many European and Russian mediators for the last ten years is currently freely available in Russian online, on the websites of Garage Museum of Contemporary Art and the Ural Industrial Biennial's Mediation School.

The publication was preceded by a series of online seminars, where educators, curators, and researchers of pedagogical practices from Switzerland and Russia addressed a number of key ideas and issues developed by Mörsch, placing them in the specific circumstances of educational practices in contemporary Russian and European cultural institutions.
