Garage Museum of Contemporary Art, in collaboration with Neighbors’ Language School, launches Museums and Migration Environment—a series of educational events composed of lectures, workshops, and discussions based around the work of contemporary institutions with people with migrant experience.

Resuming the conversation about migration in modern society and the role of cultural institutions therein, Garage Museum of Contemporary Art and Neighbors’ Language School have developed the series of events Museums and Migration Environment. Consisting of lectures, workshops, and discussions, the course features experts in the field of migration, cultural policy, and education, as well as curators who will share their experience using case studies of their work with people who have migrant backgrounds.

Discussion “Ethnic and cultural diversity and modern migrations: a curator’s view”

Topics such as interaction of people and meanings in the context of urban diversity and the perception of migrant processes are rarely considered by curators in Russia as a starting point for new exhibitions. Nevertheless, it is always necessary to reflect upon these issues, since migration has become one of the key aspects in the modus operandi of contemporary cities

Emigrant Avant-Garde: Questioning the Cultural Segregation Using Art Practices

The session is devoted to migrants’ social experiences and their reflection in artistic practices. The lector will discuss Western European theater spectacles involving migrants, their political implications, and the specificity of the representation of migrants within the Russian cultural environment

Mark Simon, social studies researcher, docent at Moscow School of Social and Economic Sciences, senior associate at the Center for Theoretical and Practical Political Science at Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration (RANEPA).

Lecture “Adapting the museum space for multilingual visitors”

The work of museum institutions with ethnocultural diversity embraces multiple components, where the very transformation of the museum space for visitors who speak different languages is one of the most visible aspects. The lecture will analyze several case studies from the experience of institutions that have opened their doors for audiences of all types.

Discussion “How consider ethnic and cultural diversity when delivering education projects”

The participants will discuss how contemporary museums develop education projects bearing in mind the issues of ethnic and cultural diversity—before delivering a workshop enabling the case study of education projects specific for various museum types.
