The first meeting will take place on Sunday May 21 at 13:00 and will explore Nadezhda Plungian’s book The Birth of the Soviet Woman: The Worker, the Peasant, the Pilot, the «Former Person, ” and Other Women in Art, 1917–1939.
The Birth of the Soviet Woman is a detailed art historical analysis of a whole spectrum of types of «new women» constructed by the Soviet authorities in the 1920s and 1930s. The author demonstrates the close relationship between agit-prop aims and social change and innovation in art, and also proposes looking at early Soviet gender reform as the basis of the variety of artistic solutions that appeared.
The moderator of the meeting will be Katya Suverina, who has a PhD in Cultural Studies and is the editor of The Birth of the Soviet Woman. She is a teacher and researcher in the field of gender and historical trauma. Participants will discuss how to perceive Soviet art and its "legacy", why it is important to study the history of female artists, and why art requires gender optics.
