DESCRIPTION

Garage’s new project with UNIQLO includes a lecture by Garage Archive Curator, author of many studies in the history of Russian contemporary art Sasha Obukhova.

In her lecture "Life as Art: Fashion and Style from the 1960s to the 1990s", Sasha Obukhova will talk about the development of Garage Archive Collection, which grew out of her personal archive and currently holds the biggest selection of sources on Russian contemporary art.

Drawing on rare photographs of the time, she will discuss the development of alternative Soviet fashion, focusing on the artists of Moscow and Leningrad underground who became their generations’ trailblazers in art and in fashion: Dmitry Krasnopevtsev, Nikita Alekseev, Timur Novikov, Sergei Shutov, Gosha Ostretsov, and others.

ABOUT THE LECTURER

 

Sasha Obukhova is curator of Garage Archive Collection at Garage Museum of Contemporary Art. From 1993 to 1996, she worked at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Moscow and from 1999 to 2003, she was Senior Researcher at the State Tretyakov Gallery. In 2004, she became a founding member and director of the Art Project Foundation, where she established the Archive of Contemporary Russian Art. She has also written extensively on Russian contemporary art.
