DESCRIPTION

During the annual all-Russian Library Night, Sergei Bespamyatnykh, DVR Movement, and Rostan Tavasiev will introduce their artist’s books, created for Garage Library within the framework of the Single Copy program.

Launched by Garage Library in 2017, Single Copy is a project aimed at fostering the development of the artist’s book medium in Russia and expanding its own collection of artist’s books. Every year, the library commissions three Russian artists to produce unique works in a single copy edition for the Museum’s collection.

Sergei Bespamyatnykh (Novosibirsk), DVR Movement (Vladivostok), and Rostan Tavasiev (Moscow) have been selected to take part in the project in 2021.

Whales. A Book of Records by Bespamyatnykh S. by Sergei Bespamyatnykh was created with the aim of registering the artist’s works depicting whales, sold between November 1992 and March 2021. According to the author’s conception, it is designed to answer the question “Why do whales appear so often in his works?”, frequently addressed to Bespamyatnykh.

The Age of Freedom by DVR is defined by the authors as “a catechism and a reference book of the Khaganate-era house construction, compiled on the eve of DVR’s move to the village of Gornovodnoe in the north of Primorye.” Using the artists’ own words, the publication “was supposed to become a manifesto of a new form of collectivity, living together, and artistic creation, but in the process of writing, it attained the form of a grimoire about dreams and death, the sea and taiga, fragile ties and the Ussurians’ endless feast at the festive table.”

Rostan Tavasiev’s Catalog of Art Projects in Outer Space. Planetary Nebulae is a compilation of works for the implementation of which have been selected star systems that go through the initial stage of the planetary nebula formation. These works are meant to be realized directly in space.

Moderator: Valery Ledenev, Chief Librarian at Garage.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Sergei Bespamyatnykh (b. 1970, Chelyabinsk Region) graduated in Civil Engineering from Novosibirsk Institute of Architecture (1995). A member of the Union of Artists of Russia, he lives and works in Novosibirsk.

DVR Movement is an art group founded in Vladivostok in 2016, which currently involves 13 people. Rather than concentrating on specific media, DVR members work at the intersection of music, noise improvisation, performance, applied arts, and theater. The abbreviation in their name can be decoded in several ways (in Russian), including Far Eastern Female Separators, Far Eastern Republic (a state entity that served as a buffer between Soviet Russia and Japan in 1920–1922), and Daughters of Faithful Parents. In 2020, the group was awarded the Innovation Prize (New Generation nomination). DVR participants live and work in the village of Gornovodnoe (Primorsky Krai).

Rostan Tavasiev (b. 1976, Moscow) studied at the Stroganov Moscow State University of Arts and Industry and the Institute of Contemporary Art in Moscow. His practice explores the interaction of art and science fiction. Since 2016, Tavasiev has been researching possibilities for the creation of artworks in outer space. He lives and works in Moscow.
