Japanese design today is not only about minimalism and functionality but also about a rich intellectual tradition in which the appearance of an object is inseparable from philosophy, art, and everyday life. Maria Savostyanova will explore how Japanese designers create highly original visual language, the influence it has on global culture, and why the Japanese approach to materiality resonates so powerfully in the age of globalization.
Maria Savostyanova is an art historian, critic, and lecturer. She is a faculty member in the School of Design at the Institute of Social Sciences, RANEPA (Moscow) and deputy publisher of Russian Art Focus, an online magazine on contemporary art. She has written over 450 articles and interviews with key figures in contemporary design and is author of the book Design Today, published by Garage in 2021.
