DESCRIPTION

As part of Garage Museum of Contemporary Art’s partnership with the UNIQLO clothing brand, art historian Alla Schipakina will trace the emergence of fashion in the Soviet Union, the evolution of “Russian style” spanning several decades from the 1917 revolution until the 1990s, as well other nuances related to her subject.

Since early childhood, Alla Schipakina has been in close contact with notable Soviet fashion and costume designers and couturiers. Having dedicated her career to the All-Union House of Fashion Design on Kuznetsky Most, where she held the position of an art historian, Alla will shed light behind-the-scenes of the Soviet fashion industry, follow the lives of some brilliant designers and the House of Fashion’s first models, touch upon the twentieth century’s “Russian style” and demonstrate unique materials from her private archival collection, including illustrations, catwalk photographs, designers’ sketches and drawings.

Alla Schipakina is fashion historian and designer, former senior art historian at the All-Union House of Fashion Design on Kuznetsky Most, author of the book Moda v SSSR. Sovetsky Kuznetsky, 14 (“Fashion in the USSR. The Soviet Kuznetsky, 14”).
