DESCRIPTION

Two old friends remember their youth and go on a drinking tour around Venice in a road movie that was featured in Un Certain Regard at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival.

One night, like every other night, two friends, Carlobianchi (Sergio Romano) and Doriano (Pierpaolo Capovilla) are drinking in a roadside Italian bar. Their friend and former drinking buddy, who long ago moved to Argentina, is coming back to Italy and the two decide to meet him at the airport to have a last one for the road. In Venice, they meet young architect Giulio (Filippo Scotti), who is too shy to profess his love to a girl. The two friends take him with them on their nostalgic drinking tour.

Strangely, The Last One for the Road—Francesco Sossai’s second feature—feels closer to the Finnish rather than the Italian film tradition, and in particular to Aki Kaurismyaki, whose protagonists like to spend time talking heart-to-heart over a drink. Sossai has no morals to share with either his characters or the viewer. Like the two old friends, he knows that important things can come up in conversations like theirs, even if they get forgotten with the last sip of beer.

The film will be screened in Italian, English, Spanish, and Japanese with Russian subtitles.
