DESCRIPTION

Kirill Serebrennikov’s new black-and-white feature looks at the 1980s’ underground rock scene in Leningrad. The story of freedom, change, and the end of the era that nobody expected to end revolves around the young Viktor Tsoi, Mike Naumenko and his wife Natalia.

The characters in Leto live at the edge of the USSR, expecting changes that will bring with them not only freedom but also the end of the era and death—its main character as it turns out. Kirill Serebrennikov recreates the 1980s and at the same time translates them into fiction, inserting into the "realistic" narration rock & roll numbers and "rough" divertissements with the sign "It was not." Such an imaginary view of the time is a liberation of the past from ideological and visual cliches, both then and now.

The film was part of the program of the main competition of the 71st Cannes Film Festival (2018).
