Poor Folk. Kabakovs—a documentary film on Russian contemporary art classics Ilya and Emilia Kabakov.
In Poor Folk. Kabakovs Ilya Kabakov talks about the origins of creativity—the tragic fate of his mother, which influenced the artist’s worldview and subsequent coming of age as an artist. Together with his wife and co-author Emilia, he discusses unofficial art in the Soviet Union and the emergence of Moscow conceptualism, emigration to Europe and later to the United States, and how, after «a 30-year-long exhibition hunger» (in the Soviet Union, Kabakov refused to exhibit publicly), they received worldwide recognition. Today, the Kabakovs’ works are part of the world’s leading museum collections, including MoMa, New York; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; and Hamburger Kunsthalle.
