Twin Peaks, Blue Velvet, and Mulholland Drive analysed in detail: a journey into the great director’s sources of inspiration.
At a festival screening of Mulholland Drive, David Lynch was asked which films had influenced him. He answered briefly and, as is typical for him, enigmatically, that there isn’t a day goes by that he doesn’t think about The Wizard of Oz. Philippe has constructed his exploration of Lynch’s universe based on this reference to the classic American film (1939) about a girl called Dorothy.
Philippe invited six film critics and directors, including trash cinema maestro John Walters, to consider Lynch’s frightening and attractive images, taking The Wizard of Oz and Hollywood myths as their starting point. They analyse his filmography in detail, looking at things that the ordinary viewer may not notice or understand. The red shoes of the main character in Wild at Heart, the name of the diner in Twin Peaks, and the essence of the complex combination of reality and fantasy in Mulholland Drive are all discussed. The result is a very entertaining film and, considering Lynch usually answers questions about hidden meanings in his films with something like «you know the answer, one that is invaluable».
The film will be screened in English with Russian subtitles.
