DESCRIPTION

A manifesto for conscious fashion: a British designer tries to change the fashion industry from within.

If the fashion industry was a country, it would be in the top 3 emitters of greenhouse gases after the USA and China. Garment workers in the third world are paid a pittance. Three out of five garments made in a season end up in landfill within a year. This is not news, but only a few brands accept that it is a problem and even fewer are prepared to make more than a symbolic gesture and change their approach to production. The founder of the British brand Mother of Pearl, Amy Powney, is one of the few.

Awarded British Vogue’s Best Young Designer of the Year, Amy decided to spend her prize money on a sustainable collection: minimal use of water and no harmful chemicals, and fair labor conditions and pay for all participants in the process. This took three years, during which time she traveled to Peru, Turkey, and Austria, to sheep farms, cotton fields, and textile factories. At first, Amy’s quest seems like an adventure, but it soon becomes apparent that it is hard work: finding the optimal solutions is difficult and it is even more complex within the economics of fast fashion. Amy admits that it is unlikely that everyone who makes and wears garments will follow her example, but she hopes that this film will make us consider whether that fifteenth T-shirt for the price of two cups of coffee is really necessary.

The film will be screened in English with Russian subtitles.
