Film Screening: Ethnostalking: Reconstruction of Ritual Practices. A Program of Ethno Video Art

DEscription

A retrospective of ethnofuturist video works of the 2010s–2020s from Udmurtia, Finland, and Estonia.

Zhon-Zhon Sandyr, an artist and member of the group EMNOYUMNO (Divine Elixir), defines ethno “stalking” as a “theater of transfiguration,” an artistic process of searching for one’s identity within ethnic mythology. EMNOYUMNO do this mainly through performance and video. Since 2013, the group has organized annual ethnofuturist video and performance meetings in remote Finno-Ugric villages.

The program includes short videos from different years by EMNOYUMNO and other participants of the ethnofuturist movement and meetings, including landmark works such as LUD, where women from the village of Staraya Salya participate in a performance in a traditionally male place of Udmurt prayer, and Bur na! Syodmurcha shur! (Well, Hello, Spirit of the River Shchedmurcha!], which records the ritual of pleasing the river spirit. Rituals, living them, and their reinterpretation are at the heart of most of the works in the program.

In addition to video art from Udmurtia, Finland, and Estonia, the program also features experimental films created at a Finno-Ugric Film Festival (FUFF) workshop in 2019.
