DESCRIPTION

Chronicle of the life, decay, and death of Rainer Werner Fassbinder, one of the greatest filmmakers of the second half of the twentieth century.

1967, Fassbinder is 22: he is rude to others, stages theater performances, and goes out to gay clubs at night. In 1982, he is 37 and, by his own admission, he loves to hit rock bottom, where there is nothing left to lose.  He has a few dozen films to his name, along with worldwide festival recognition and the broken lives of those he once loved. Using Fassbinder's own quote from Querelle, “Each man kills the thing he loves.”

One of the most brilliant directors in postwar Germany, Fassbinder’s productivity and efforts to grasp the nature of love, his constant reflection, and an equally persistent craving for shocking behavior and self-destruction have made him an ideal subject for a biopic. Oskar Roehler meticulously captures all the unique features of this enfant terrible’s personality in a poisonously illuminated, semi-theatrical cinematic manner.

The film is screened in English, German, and French with Russian subtitles.
